The Project
An annual report on the cooperative world that practically builds itself
Gnucoop has developed a tool for Legacoop Area Studi to simplify the preparation of its annual data analysis report on the cooperative world. The current process involves many manual steps: starting from datasets supplied by ISTAT, more than 200 Excel tables are built by hand, from which the charts and tables for the report are derived, together with the text that explains the findings. Because the data for the whole time window of the report, typically five years, has to be requested from ISTAT every year, the same data ends up being requested and processed again for five consecutive editions.
The aim of the work was to automate everything that can be automated, leaving people free to focus on the activities where added value is created: analysis, interpretation and review of the content. Gnucoop built a data collection platform that imports ISTAT data in a semi-automatic, incremental way, one year at a time, keeping a ten-year history in memory that can be explored over flexible time windows.
From this database, the platform automatically generates all 233 objects of the report, charts and tables, each accompanied by a first draft of commentary written by artificial intelligence, which analysts can then review, correct and expand.
The system was developed in a test environment to demonstrate the feasibility of the process and verify the correctness of the results.
